Ziggy's Training
The striking scarlet macaw's feathers and lively personality make it one of the most loved parrot species kept in captivity. In the wild, this massive bird is part of the parrot family and is found in tropical rainforests throughout Central and South America.
They are monogamous birds and are able to mate for the rest of their lives, usually beginning their breeding season around a year after they reach sexual maturity. The hen typically lays three to four white eggs, which hatch within five weeks. The chicks are then released out of the nest 90 days after hatching, and leave their parents around a year later.
They are a wonderful fit for people who have the time and money to give them the best possible care. They are intelligent, social and can be taught many tricks and behavior. Although they can be loud at times, they are primarily curious and playful. Like all parrots, they should be provided with high-quality food which includes a specially formulated parrot mix, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as high-calcium greens like Kale.
The scarlet macaw is most at risk from habitat destruction due to the destruction of rainforests and heavy exploitation as an ornamental bird. They are also listed on the CITES Appendix I list which means that commercial trade within these birds is not permitted.
